A New Logo for Me… Err the Website

As I go down these creative endeavors one element I thought was necessary is a new logo. A logo that is “me” err well as Quiet Liz and thus this website as well. Initially I started with an idea I had toyed around with long ago. After all the “quiet” in Quiet Liz came from an epiphany moment in therapy. It was early on but we were talking about transitioning and how I felt, I blurted out the first thing that came to my mind, “I don’t have to be quiet anymore.”

I don’t have to be quiet anymore.

A literal representation of that concept seemed like a good place to start. Before that version I had one with lips and a finger held up, a “Shh…” symbol if you will but that kept giving me the wrong impression thus I moved away from it.

Talking Lips Xed Out

Even after shifting away from the “Shh…” look to the Lips Xed out it still didn’t feel right. I gave it some time to make sure it wasn’t something that I was only initially feeling but it continued to linger.

I decided to take a more abstract approach and go off of other elements that are also “me” feeling. It started with a violet my favorite flower (technically viola genus). I love the color purple, I’m not sure why or how it started but I’ll chalk it up to Mace Windu. The other element of violets that appealed to me is that there isn’t one flower but rather many flowers. While researching inspiration I did learn there are key elements that are iconic if you will. There were 5-7 pedals, the pedals are more blunt than pointy, they’re purple, and there is a small void in the center.

As I was fleshing that version out I decided to play with the idea of removing the back 2 pedals. In place of the 2 pedals a d20 (20 sided die) as well in many ways those tend to be a big part of my life in various ways. While I love d8s for the pun that can be made a d20 allowed me to include my favorite number, 13!

Now that origin I can recall. As a kid we had a storage unit in tall building. The elevator didn’t have a 13th floor button, that’s when my dad told me about how 13 was an unlucky number. How as a result of 13 being unlucky many places didn’t have a 13th floor. The idea of there being a floor that would remain completely empty for fear of bad luck was creepy cool to me. Even after pointing out that there wasn’t an empty floor and they just labeled the 13th floor as the 14th floor. I was a kid, there was no taking it away from me, 13 was cool.

Now the initial idea is that what sits where the 2 pedals were removed will be thematic. So for example a book could replace the d20 when in relation to bookmaking. I don’t know if that’ll end up happening but that’s for another day. This logo I am happy with as a symbol or icon for me, Quiet Liz.

Next up will be figuring out a font/look for “Quiet Liz” for the times I’ll want it to go with the symbol/icon version.
